Open, modular simulation of coupled physical processes
A research project aimed at developing a free and open-source computational environment in which materials, machines, process configurations, physical models, numerical methods, calculation engines and post-processing tools can evolve independently and be recombined as needed.
Current academic reference process: flash-butt welding. Current implementation: an evolving research platform, not a finished industrial product.
Current academic reference process
Why flash-butt welding?
Flash-butt welding is the first process used to develop and stress the architecture, not the final scope of the platform. It combines electrical contact, resistance heating, flashing, heat transfer, moving boundaries, material loss, mechanical deformation, upsetting and metallurgical evolution in a single process family.
The choice also builds on previous research from 2018, providing an established scientific starting point. The collaborators initially approached were contacted because their publications and academic work relate directly to the scientific questions addressed here. As the project evolves, additional researchers may be invited on the same basis, using relevant academic production as a starting point for focused, asynchronous scientific collaboration. Components developed here are intended to be reusable or adaptable where their governing assumptions remain valid.
Materials are extensible
DP600 is the current dataset, not a platform restriction
The current material database is being assembled around DP600 steel. Collaborators may provide sufficiently documented experimental data for other metallic materials; those datasets can motivate new material entries and new validation cases.
